Published On June 20, 2023. Today was a big day for budget Nikon telephoto lenses! Alongside the long-awaited announcement of the Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR, Nikon also unveiled the Z 70-180mm f/2.8. This $1250 Tamron-designed lens complements Nikon’s existing 17-28mm f/2.8 and 28-75mm f/2.8 to form a budget f/2.8 trio. Here’s what we know.
This 70-200mm VR II is sharper in the corners at 200mm than the old 70-200mm VR. This 70-200mm VR II is also slightly sharper than the previous gold standard, the 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-S (1999-2004), which fetched high used prices because it was slightly sharper than the previous 70-200mm f/2.8 VR (2003-2009).
What is the difference between Nikon Nikkor Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S and Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR? Find out which is better and their overall performance in the camera lens ranking. I have D600 with a Nikkor 24-85mm f3.5-4.5 kit lens. I have rented the 85mm f1.4 and I like the way it renders. I would like to have more flexibility and am considering the Nikkor 70-200 f4, f2.8. In July of this year I owned and shot the following lenses 70-200mm f/2.8VRII, 200-500mm f/5.6VR, 200-400mm f/4VR and the 300mm f/2.8AFS II. The 300mm f/2.8 AFS II has the same optical formula as the VRII, but lack nano-coating, VR and the VR element that moves within the lens. I was heading out for a 9 day photo workshop in British Columbia By f/8, the lenses are a bit more comparable, although the 24-70mm f/4 S still has the edge. By f/11 and f/16, diffraction has evened out lens performance to the point where the two are nearly identical. And here is how the lenses look at 50mm: The Nikon Z 24-70mm corner sharpness drops at 50mm, but unfortunately so does that of the 24-120mm f/4. For travel and casual, the 24-200 would be fine. The 24-70 f/4 is a bit sharper (especially in the middle of the range) but the 24-200 is probably more versatile. I would say if your budget allows, buy the kit with the 24-200 and buy a second hand (used) 24-70 f/4 (you can get them used for around $400+). The 100-400 is also a fantastic lens, but doesn't quite have the bite wide open as the 70-200 f2.8S. Yes, it is super sharp wide open, but that 70-200 is simply ridiculous at f2.8. I use the 100-400 for birding, sports like soccer etc and zoos whereas I wouldn't use the 70-200 f2.8S + 2x TC so much as the 100-400 is better at the longer 300-400 The highly-desirable 70-200mm telephoto zoom has come to the Z series. Sports, concerts, weddings, wildlife, portraiture and so much more—all with the incredible low light performance of an f/2.8 made only better by the optically superior Z mount. Optical advancements support passionate cinematographers and videographers. 1ld1.
